Moving to Paraguay can be stressful and create "culture shock"

We sat down to talk with Ivanna Ortiz, a bilingual psychologist in Asunción, to talk about different challenges expats might face when moving to Paraguay and how life might be different and more difficult than first expected.

## What psychological challenges do expats face in Paraguay?

Ivanna: Deciding to move to another country is a major life change. Even though you might be fully certain of your decision, there can be difficult unexpected difficult moments such as missing old friends and family or dealing with frustrating culture shock, just to name a few.

These heartaches and homesickness can make anyone second-guess their decisions, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you made a wrong choice. Adjustment takes time.

## You mentioned culture shock. What does that mean?

Ivanna: It's part of the process of adapting to a new country. You come in with a lot of expectations and things that you took for granted in your old country. Then, you come here and to your surprise, it's all done the other way around here! This can be a reason for irritability, which would seem irrational to a local, further causing frustration to you.

## Can learning Spanish improve your mental health?

Ivanna: Absolutely. The lack of being able to communicate to the people around you only isolates you more. We are social beings, we thrive within relationships. That’s why I really like Fluido’s mission to create a community where foreigners can feel at home, and have a place to share their own personal struggles and learn from each other’s experiences.

## When should an expat consider seeing a psychologist?

Ivanna: If you happen to be considering seeing a psychologist, it’s probably a good sign. Therapy is not just for working through difficult life-altering situations such as grief, breakups, anxiety, and such. Therapy can also provide a space to understand yourself better, and get to know yourself more.

## Can expats find therapy (in English) in Paraguay?

Yes. You can contact Ivanna Ortiz to learn more about her psychological approach and available in person and online sessions. She is located in Barrio Herrera, Asunción and speaks both English and Spanish
