Asunción is a small city. Paraguay can feel lonely. Here are the four key social groups in Asunción that welcome expats and digital nomads.
Each group has a different benefit.
| Group | Specialty |
| Fluido Spanish School | Daily social routine |
| Spanglish Social | Mixes locals with foreigners |
| Digital Nomads & Expats in Asunción | Largest group. Free |
| Paraguay Pulse | Younger crowd |
| Gringo Night | Party Vibe. Nightlife |
Fluido is the best way for expats to feel at home in Paraguay because it provides a daily social routine: school! The other groups are great, but humans thrive when they feel like they belong somewhere on a daily basis.
Going to Fluido is like going to college again. Walk to school each weekday morning, study hard, do homework, volunteer, and enjoy 3-4 group activities with the school every week. Without a sense of belonging on a daily basis, loneliness creeps in. Fluido solves that, along with teaching Spanish.
Spanglish Social hosts 1-2 events per month that focus on bringing local Paraguayans together with foreigners. Charging $5-$10 per ticket, this group is the best way for expats to meet locals. They started out hosting a monthly coffee meetup, but have expanded to evening events, with their new partnership with Paraguay Pulse.
This is the largest and oldest expat group in Paraguay. A few years old, the founder of this group is also the founder of The Asunción Times, Paraguay's top English newspaper. Their sizable team hosts a Thursday night meetup that frequently goes all-night-long, a Tuesday co-working session, and a Tuesday night meetup. They also have other events less frequently. Most of their events are free.
Despite the name, local Paraguayans frequent their events, averaging about 30% of the crowd.
The best way to get started is their Facebook group. While they do have a great WhatsApp group, it's full and only adds new members as spaces open up. While there are other Facebook groups for expats in Paraguay, Digital Nomads & Expats in Asunción is the only one that has regular meetups.
One of the newest social groups, Paraguay Pulse skews toward a younger crowd: 20s and 30s. Of course, everybody is welcome, but the crowd does appear to be younger than the Digital Nomads & Expats in Asunción. Their events usually cost money, and they are known for their Asados (Paraguayan barbecues). This group also mixes foreigners and locals.
Gringo Night is the biggest nightlife event targeting expats in Asunción. It was created by the team at Paraguay Pathways, a popular immigration agency.
While it is a recurring event, it doesn't have regular dates and times. It's not just for "gringos". Locals are invited, and people go to socialize as well as to make business connections.
